Addressing & Configuration

How can I replace a luminaire in a DALI installation without a PC to assign the correct address?

    By Lichtvision Engineering · Published

    Short answer

Use ProbitSite's stand-alone configuration. Connect it to the DALI bus, select the new luminaire, and write the desired short address (A0–A63) directly from the handheld device. No laptop, no Windows app, and no full bus re-scan are needed.

Use case: quick luminaire replacement during maintenance

A failed driver or LED module has been swapped, but the new gear still carries its factory default address or the address of the old unit. Normally you would fetch a laptop, open the commissioning software, connect via the gateway, and re-scan the whole line. With ProbitSite you skip all of that.

Stand-alone addressing: ProbitSite as a field configurator

ProbitSite is not only a DALI tester and logger. In Expert Mode it acts as a stand-alone DALI address editor. You can set, change, and delete short addresses directly on the device, without any PC connection. This makes it a true field configurator for everyday maintenance jobs.

The old way vs. the new way

    Old way without ProbitSite

    1. Replace the luminaire mechanically. 2. Fetch a laptop, boot it, and start the commissioning software. 3. Connect the programming interface or gateway. 4. Re-scan the whole bus, risking shifted addresses in the gateway database.

    New way with ProbitSite

    1. Replace the luminaire mechanically. 2. Connect ProbitSite to the DALI bus. 3. Select the new device and enter the desired short address (A0–A63). 4. Confirm. Done in seconds.

Why "without a PC" matters on site

Installers and maintenance staff rarely carry a laptop into every ceiling void. A handheld tool that can write addresses autonomously saves time and avoids the risk of accidentally changing other devices during a full re-commissioning. The short address is assigned locally, so the rest of the bus, groups, scenes, and gateway mappings remain untouched.

    Good to know

Stand-alone configuration works for individual control gear with a random address. If you are unsure which device is the new one, run a SmartScan first to see the current addresses, then use the blink function to identify the luminaire before writing the new address. After the change, re-scan only that device to confirm the address took hold.
