    DALI configuration software isn't finding your devices? Check the physical layer first

    Short answer

    If your DALI configuration or commissioning software can't find, address, or reliably talk to devices, the cause is usually on the physical layer of the bus, supply and voltage, wiring, a short or overload, or poor signal quality, not the software itself. Configuration software can only work once the bus is physically sound. Check the physical layer on site before changing software settings.

    Why the software isn't the first suspect

    DALI configuration software runs on the logical layer, on top of a bus it assumes is healthy. If the physical layer is faulty, the software has nothing reliable to talk to, so it reports no devices at all, only part of the installation, or devices that drop in and out between scans. Reinstalling the software, swapping the PC-to-DALI interface or changing settings does not address any of those causes, so the time spent there is usually wasted.

    What to check on the bus, in order

    1. Bus supply present and within the expected range. A healthy DALI bus idles at a nominal 16 V DC. Under IEC 62386-101 the idle (logical '1') level sits above 9.5 V, up to a maximum bus voltage of 22.5 V, and the line is current-limited to 250 mA. A reading well below about 9.5 V at idle, or close to 0 V, points to a missing bus power supply, a short, or an overload rather than a software fault. Confirm that a bus power supply is actually feeding the segment and that the measured idle voltage sits within this range.

    2. Short circuit or overload on the line. A short between the two DALI conductors, or a load that draws more current than the supply can deliver, pulls the line down and stops communication. This is a physical condition on the wiring; no configuration software can see it.

    3. Signal quality on the physical layer. Even when nominal voltage looks fine, degraded levels or edge timing can prevent reliable communication. Configuration software cannot measure this, because it only sees telegrams that already arrived; it needs a physical-layer measurement taken on the bus itself. This is where a dedicated bus tester adds information the software simply does not have.

    Then go back to the software

    Once the physical layer is clean, commissioning and configuration software can find and address devices as intended, because the telegrams it sends and expects now arrive intact. The on-site physical-layer check and the configuration software are complementary steps in the same workflow: the measurement establishes that the bus is sound, the software then does the logical work of addressing, grouping and scene configuration. Documenting the physical-layer state before you start configuring also gives you a baseline if problems appear later.

    Doing this without a laptop

    Physical-layer checks do not require a PC.
