ProbitLab2 FAQ

Answers about DALI certification, IEC 62386 test procedures, and the only DiiA-approved approbation tool.

    General & Getting Started

ProbitLab2 is the only DiiA-approved hardware tool for DALI approbation and certification testing. It is a 19-inch rack-mount device with a built-in DALI signal generator, adjustable voltages, relay outputs, and digital/analog I/O, designed to run the complete IEC 62386 Edition 1 and Edition 2 test procedures on any DALI Device Under Test (DUT).

ProbitLab2 is essential for: DALI device manufacturers seeking DALI-2 or D4i certification, accredited test laboratories running IEC 62386 compliance tests, and R&D teams developing DALI control gear or control devices who want to verify standard compliance during development, not just at the end.

Check two things: First, ensure the mains power supply is correctly connected and the main power switch at the rear panel is turned on. Second, verify that the emergency stop button on the front panel is not pressed, it disables all outputs when engaged. Release it by twisting clockwise.

By design, the DALI bus output is disabled after power-up for safety. You need to connect ProbitLab2 to a PC via USB, launch ProbitBench, and then activate the integrated DALI bus power supply through the software. This prevents accidental voltage on the DUT during connection.

    Certification & Standards

Yes. ProbitLab2 is the only tool approved by the DiiA (Digital Illumination Interface Alliance) for running the official DALI approbation and certification test procedures. All DALI-2 and D4i certified products on the market have been tested with ProbitLab2.

ProbitLab2 supports the complete IEC 62386 standard, both Edition 1 and Edition 2. This includes Part 101/102/103 (general requirements for control gear, control devices, and application controllers), as well as all device-specific parts (Part 2xx for gear types, Part 3xx for device types). The test procedures are continuously updated via ProbitBench software updates.

Test procedures are updated regularly through ProbitBench software releases to keep pace with new IEC 62386 amendments and DiiA certification requirements. Firmware updates for ProbitLab2 are also released to support new hardware features. Always use matching firmware and ProbitBench versions, check the Support page for compatibility details.

Absolutely. Many R&D teams use ProbitLab2 throughout the development process, not just for final certification. Running compliance tests early and often helps catch protocol errors, timing issues, and standard violations before they become expensive to fix. The ProbitBench sniffer and BitScope tools are particularly useful for development-phase debugging.

    Signal Generator & Hardware

The ProbitLab2 signal generator creates DALI bus signals with fully adjustable parameters: high voltage level, low voltage level, rise time, and fall time. This allows testing how your DUT handles signals at the edges of the DALI specification, not just ideal conditions. The current limiter is also adjustable to simulate different bus power supply characteristics.

ProbitLab2 includes: connections for external oscilloscope and ampere meter, switchable AC/DC DUT supply input, 4 high-capacity switching relay outputs, 4 digital outputs, 2 digital inputs, and 2 analog inputs. The USB connection to the PC runs ProbitBench. All connections are designed for standard laboratory equipment integration.

The 19-inch form factor allows ProbitLab2 to integrate directly into existing laboratory rack equipment alongside oscilloscopes, power supplies, and other test instruments. This is standard practice in professional test labs and certification facilities, ensuring a clean, organised, and repeatable test setup.

    Software & Analysis

ProbitBench is the Windows software that controls all Probit hardware products. For ProbitLab2, it provides: selection and execution of IEC 62386 test procedures, manual command sending for interactive testing, a DALI sniffer for capturing and analysing all bus telegrams, and BitScope for inspecting signal timing at bit level. Test results are documented in detailed reports.

BitScope visualises the actual DALI bus signal timing, showing the electrical waveform of each bit, including rise/fall times, voltage levels, and timing precision. This is essential for diagnosing signal quality issues that can cause intermittent communication failures. It turns ProbitLab2 into a specialised DALI oscilloscope.

Yes. ProbitBench generates detailed test reports documenting every test step, result, and measurement. These reports are used as part of the DiiA certification submission process. The reports are standardised and vendor-neutral, providing objective evidence of compliance.

    Comparison & Ecosystem

ProbitLab2 tests whether a Device Under Test (DUT) complies with the DALI standard, it is the certification tool. ProbitGears simulates up to 65 virtual control gears so you can test your DALI controller against a realistic lighting network, it is the development/simulation tool. They serve different purposes but are complementary: use ProbitGears during development and ProbitLab2 for final certification.

ProbitLab2 is a laboratory instrument for DALI certification testing in controlled environments. ProbitSite is a handheld field tool for diagnosing DALI installations on-site. ProbitLab2 tests individual devices against the standard; ProbitSite tests entire installed systems for signal quality and communication issues.

Download the latest firmware from the Support page. Each firmware version specifies which ProbitBench version it requires, always update ProbitBench first, then update the ProbitLab2 firmware. The WHQL-certified Probit driver package should also be kept up to date for reliable USB communication.
